Federal Funding Roundtable Debriefed and Stimulus Opportunities for Legal Services
Last month at the NLADA Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, there were two conference sessions that provided information on funding opportunities for legal aid. One session was the Federal Funding Roundtable (Roundtable) led by Meredith McBurney, ABA Resource Center for Access to Justice and Don Saunders, director, NLADA Civil Legal Services. This session provided an update on federal funding from non-LSC sources and allowed the field to share information, ideas and strategies on raising and increasing these funds.

House Increases Legal Aid Funding for Domestic Violence Victims
On June 17, the House of Representatives passed, by a vote of 425-4, an amendment authored by Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI) to increase funding for the Violence Against Women Act Legal Assistance Program by $4 million. Fiscal year 2010 funding level will now be $41 million. The roll call vote is available at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll354.xml

HUD Stimulus funding for homelessness prevention
I have been told that HUD expects all proposals to be submitted for this program by the States by May 17th. HUD has also encouraged states to get their proposals into their system as soon as possible before May 18th -- so in fact, Maine is hoping to complete their proposal by May 1. HUD's response is expected on a 6 week turnaround basis --so c. July 6, but folks do not expect HUD to make any changes in the proposal forwarded by the States. ARRA funding will be available by September.
Serve DC Holds Grant Competition for ARRA Funding
Serve DC- The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism has announced a plan to distribute AmeriCorps funds granted to the agency through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA.) The funds, which are available to current AmeriCorps sub-grantees, will assist programs in the process of helping individuals and communities cope with the economic downturn, and provide necessary services that will support the rebuilding process. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law by President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009.
